int nextRow = 12; 

Row r = sheet.getRow(nextRow); 
if (r == null) { 
    r = sheet.createRow(nextRow); 
} 

Cell c = r.getCell(2, Row.CREATE_NULL_AS_BLANK); 
c.setCellValue("My String"); 

nextRow++;
